Ornamental Alternatives
Details:
Speaker: Christine Ferrero, Cornell University Master Gardener
Replacing Invasives with Beautiful Natives that can Restore a Healthy Home Habitat with Wildlife Benefits. States’ official lists of invasive plants have drawn attention to “bad actors” in home landscapes, but some of these culprits are loved by home gardeners for their attractive flowers, shade performance or fall foliage. This program singles out trees, vines, shrubs and perennials from the official Massachusetts invasives list, and explores native alternatives for each. The goal is to reward gardeners’ diligence in removing invasives by delivering bonuses with their replacements. Why not aim for superior flowers, fragrance, fruits and fall color, and gain native resilience, along with benefits for pollinators and birds?
